Graves

With thanks to Frank Mayes and the Stewartstown and District Local History Society, we are able to share the inscriptions found on the graves in the grounds of the Old Church.

These inscriptions have been digitised, using optical character recognition, from a printed copy of Stewartstown and District Local History Society's journal, The Bell. Mistakes are possible and only the text in The Bell is definitive.

3 SL. Sacred to the memory of John Pringle Henry who died on the 11th May 1860 aged 38 years. He died for Adam sinned, he lives for Jesus died.
4 HS. I.H.S. Here lyeth ye body of Margaret McGarerty daughter to Michael and Ellenor McGarerty who departed this life 14th of August 1767 aged 15 years.
5 SL. Here lies ye body of Robert McGee, sinior who departed this life January ye 23d 1764 aged 66 years. Also ye body of Robert McGee junior who departed this life February ye 25 1765 aged 21 years. Also here lyeth the body of James McGee of Moira surgeon who departed this life the 26 day of November 1772 in the [35?] year of his age.
6 SL. Here lyeth the body of James Brown who departed ye Novbr ye 20th 1741 aged 83 years; also Mary Happer his wife who died May ye 20th 1743 aged 78 years. Also ye body of Robert Brown who departed ys life August ye 7th 1752 aged 82. Also ye body of Wullm Brown who died [blank or completely worn] March 1765[?] aged 69 years. Also ye body of Josias Brown died Feb [2(5?)] 177[5 or 6] aged 65. Also ye body of Samuel Brown who departed this life March ye 16th 1783 aged 80 years. 7 HS. Here lyeth the body of Hugh Rork who departed this life March ye [30th?] 1754 aged 70 years. Also ye body of Nelly Rork who departed this life April ye 16th 1738 aged 50 years.
8 SL. I.H.S. Sacred to the memory of the Rev. John Dunn who departed this life January the 4th 1778. Requiescat in pace. In hope of glorious resurrection resteth the body of Peter Dunn who departed this life December the 2nd 1854 aged 94 years. May he rest in peace. Maria Dunn died January 20th 1880 aged 74 years. Simon Dunn died August 1st 1890 in the 88th year of his age.
9 SL. I.H.S. Erected by the Rev. John Duffy, pastor of Kildress. Sacred to the memory of his beloved father Charles Duffy who departed this life 4th March 1824 aged 68 years. He was a loving husband and tender parent, and a benevolent neighbour. Also his affectionate mother Anne Duffy alias Lavery who died 21st January 1832 aged 74 years. May their souls rest in peace, Amen. Also the remains of the late Patrick Duffy who departed this life on the 29th January AD 1841 aged 53 years.

11 SL. Here lyes ye body of Thdeddeus Roney who departed this life 24th of December 1740 aged 84 years. Also ye body of Hugh Roney who departed this life Oct. ye 8th 1771 aged 80 years. Also ye body of Jean Roney who departed this life May ye 27th 1772 aged 80 years.
12 SL. Here lyeth the body of Barnabus Gibson who departed this life March ye 2nd 1741 aged 40 years. Also the body of Barnabus Gibson who departed this life January ye 8th 1767 aged 15 years. Also the body of Sarah Gibson who departed this life Feb: ye 9th 1773 aged 18 years. Here lieth the body of William Gibson son to Barnabus the elder and father to Barnabus the younger and Sarah who departed this life July ye 25th 1791 aged 60 years.
13 HS. Margaret Jane McIntyre died 9th January 1939. William McIntyre died 27th February 1944. What is lovely never dies. McIntyre.

Also of James Hamilton of Drumads second son of the above James and Barbara Hamilton who died 21st October 1817 aged 69 years. Also Miss Barbra Hamilton who died 31st December 1856 aged 83 years. 34 SL. Underneath this stone lie the remains of Robert Bell late of Drumconvis who departed this life 8th Sept. in the year of our Lord 1852 aged 62 years. Also the remains of his grandson Robert Alex. Bell who died 29th May 1856 aged 6 years.
35 HS. Erected by Robt. McCamish D.M. [C filled in] .P. and his brother Joseph in memory of their respected father Alexr. McCamish who fell asleep in Jesus 27th June 1875 aged 66 years. Also their mother Isabella McCamish on the 11th January 1889 aged 79 years. Also Robert McCamish died 20th Feb. 1911 aged 77 years. Also his wife Mary A. McCamish died 30th March 1922 aged 63 years. 69 SL. Here lyeth the body of John Holmes of Bray who departed this life May 9th 1782 aged 66 years. Also Will Holmes of Bray who departed this life July 20 1789 aged 70 years.
70 HS. In loving memory of Pringle Henry, Ballyvenoge, who died 16th May 1920 aged 64 years. Also his infant son Albert who died 12th November 1909, and his wife Mary who died 31st March 1927 aged 59 years; his daughter Margaret who died 16th July 1967; and his son John James who died 26th Dec 1967; and his son Pringle who died 21st Feb. March 1939. Also his daughter Ella Violet who died 22nd Dec 1979. “Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away.” Also his son Robert Johnston Henry, Killochtone died 26th April 1980. Samuel Henry died 31st Dec 1980.
71 SL. Here lieth the body of John [broken, presumed “Henry”] who departed this life September ye 19 17[9?] aged 45 years. John Henry departed this life September ye 7th 1784 aged 15 years, being the third son.

73 HS. Hugh Kelley of Eary. Departed Feby 28th 1836 aged 80 yrs.
74 HS. In loving memory of Ester McKibbin, died 14th Nov 1912. Also her husband James McKibbin died 16th March 1920; and their son Thomas W. McKibbin died 29th April 1944.
75 HS. In loving memory of Rev. Henry Greene, for 37 years Rector of this parish, died 15th Dec 1871 aged 77 years; Susan his wife died 15 Feby 1887 aged 85 years; John Farran their eldest son died 18th Jan 1873 aged 43 years; Anna their 4th daughter died 22nd March 1868 aged 31 years. Also Lucy and Alicia Octavia their daughters who died in infancy. Also Henrietta Sophia their 2nd daughter died March 1922 aged 87 years and George their youngest son died 3rd June 1928 aged 84 years. “I am the resurrection and the life” - John XI verse 25.
76 HS. 1879. Erected by Henry Stewart in affectionate remembrance of his beloved wife Mary M. Stewart who departed this life 25th August 1878 aged 40 years. [on side:] R. Love, York St.
77 HS. In loving memory of Ella Sophia Kells died 27th July 1956 aged 71 years. Also her husband John James Kells died 28th June 1958 aged 74 years.
78 SL. Beneath this monument, erected by his widow and his surviving children as a tribute to the memory of an affectionate husband and kind father and faithful friend, rest interred the mortal remains of the late Mr Joseph Graham who departed this life on the 3rd of April 18[5?]8 and the year of his age 5[4?]. The tribute of his employer and friend is the inscription which this monument bears. Written by James Kennedy Baillie, incumbent of Ardtane and late Fellow of Trinity College Dublin in whose service he deceased had passed upwards of half his term of life in the fulfilment of the several duties of a responsible sexton, as agent and land steward, whose exemplary fidelity, prudence and zeal thus bequeathing to those whom he held dear the precious legacy of unblemished reputation for trustworthiness and integrity. He died as he had lived in the faith of a crucified Saviour. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.

80 SL. Here lie the remains of William Stewart of Gortigal who departed this life on the 23rd January 1841. Also those of Anne his wife who died on the 1st October 1857. Also those of their son Robert who died on the 23rd May 1834. Here also were deposited on the 7th April 1862 the remains of Jane, the beloved wife of William Stewart junr by whom this stone was placed here in testimony to his affectionate and enduring regard for her and their memory. Be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh. And of Jane Stewart of Gortigal who departed this life 10th April 1876 aged 68 years. Also William Stewart of Gortigal who departed this life 10th April 1890 aged 84 years. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord” Rev. XIV:13. Also his wife Isabella Stewart who died 20th July 1913 aged 71 years.

Also of their son James Porter died 7th Nov. 1886, aged 47 years. Also of Sarah, daughter, wife of James Porter, died 31st March 1901 aged 67 years. Also Sarah, daughter of Henry Porter died 18th Feb 1900 aged 66 years.
